Power of Speech

Matthew 21:18–22

Jesus prayed the whole night before, and the next day He cursed the fig tree. After His curse, the tree did not bear fruit anymore. This shows how important His words were, since His words carry power over everything and our speech does as well. If it had been a human instead of a tree, the result would have been the same.

What do we take from this scripture?

  • How important our words and speech are
  • How important it is to speak the right things
  • Do we bless or do we curse people with our speech?

Let us see what kind of speech we, as believers, need to use in our daily life with the Lord.

  1. Speech of Blessings

In 2 Kings 2:19–22, the passage shows us that it was not the salt that created the miracle, but the words Elijah spoke. It shows how big a difference speech can make in a short time. The same water that was supposed to bring destruction brought life.

We, as believers, often forget that our words can bring life, not only to others but also to ourselves. We need to be mindful of what we speak about ourselves. Proverbs 18:21 shows us how our words can give life. We speak many things but forget to speak what is good and what brings life. Think of how many times we have woken up and blessed ourselves in a day, and how many times we have spoken wrong or discouraging things to ourselves. Often, we do the action, like putting salt in the water, but forget to use the power of our speech. This power needs to be used to encourage and to speak good to ourselves. We must use the speech of blessing for good.

  1. Speech from the Word

Luke 10:5–6

Speaking through the Word of God is very important. How many times have we entered someone’s house and spoken peace over their life and family? We meet many people in our daily life, but what do we talk about with them? Do we preach the Gospel to them? Do we speak from the Word and proclaim peace?

Jesus always spoke from the Word. He read the Word and we often forget to do that. We may read the Bible and know many things, including verses and many incidents, but it is of no use unless we speak it. When we visit someone’s house, a relative, or a friend, what do we talk about?

Jesus spoke so much from the Word that many people did not like Him. Many people may not like us when we always talk about Jesus or preach the Gospel, but this is our calling, the very reason we are alive. The Great Commission was to preach the Gospel. When we meet someone, what do they receive from us? Do they receive God’s Word, or do we talk mostly about worldly things that have no lasting value? When we face trials and temptations, then we run to the Word and recite scriptures.

In season and out of season, we need to be ready at all times, not just waiting for the right moment. It is important to speak regardless of mood or situation. The words we speak should correct, rebuke, and encourage everyone around us through the Word, with patience. God never gave up on the Israelites and always spoke to them in many ways. We must also continue speaking the Word and never give up. Let us not talk about things that fade away, but about eternal things that will last, His Word. There is always power in that.

  1. Speech of Truth

Ephesians 4:25

We need to speak the truth and put off falsehood. We are the body of Christ. We speak the truth not out of anger, but in love; this helps us grow and respect one another. We may say many good things to people, but do we say them truthfully? Do we speak from the heart?

As the body of Christ, we must be truthful to one another and let go of enmity, bitterness, and anger. It is very important to speak the truth. Many believers go to different churches because they do not like the people, the pastor, or the service. We keep bitterness in our hearts and move on, but that will never heal us. We need to speak the truth at all times to show how much we honor the body of Christ. If we respect Jesus, we need to be truthful to one another and not be false. Speak the truth, to your pastor, to your elders, because they pray for us and need to know the truth. Maybe before we received Jesus these ways were acceptable, but not now. Otherwise, there would be no difference in us.
